For the second instalment of our employee spotlight series, we caught up with Zsuzsanna, a dedicated member of our catering team who works closely with one of our partner hospices, preparing comforting meals for patients, visitors and staff.
Can you share a bit about your background in culinary?
I first learnt to cook when I was only 12 years old. My mother taught me everything from basic skills to how to cook with confidence, and that’s where my passion for cooking began. When I started my own family, cooking became part of my everyday life and something I took real pride in.
In my role, I prepare a selection of light, freshly made lunches, and I’m always happy to support the kitchen team with salads or other tasks whenever needed. I enjoy helping out and being part of a team that works well together.
What are some of your interests and hobbies outside of work?
I love spending time with my two sons, especially when I’m teaching them how to cook. When I’m not busy in the kitchen, I like to unwind with a good movie, read a book, play puzzle games or take my dog out for a walk.
Tell us a bit about your role: what does a typical day look like in the assisted living kitchen?
I usually arrive at 7:30 in the morning during the week. On my way to work I think about the day’s menu, so I have a plan ready for when I walk through the door. I prepare our fresh, made to order light meals, such as baguettes, paninis and other deli-style options and then head to the canteen, where I serve patients and staff alongside my colleague who prepares the salads.
What inspired you to work in culinary services for a hospice?
I’ve always loved working in the kitchen, but what inspires me most in this setting is spending time with the patients and getting to know them on a more personal level. This kind of community feels very familiar to me because of my upbringing, and being here brings me a great deal of joy.
What’s your favourite meal to prepare for patients and why?
My favourite is a cheese, raspberry jam and salami baguette. It might sound like an unexpected combination, but it works beautifully and seeing how much patients enjoy it makes it even more special.
How do you accommodate meals to meet dietary needs in a hospice setting?
We keep an up-to-date list of patients who have allergies or medical conditions, and we always prepare their meals separately to ensure their safety. Both the staff canteen and the anniversary centre, have folders with an allergen sheet that can be checked at any time. Having this information readily available gives everyone peace of mind and helps them feel confident about what their food choices.
What do you enjoy most about your work here?
I really enjoy the atmosphere. It’s friendly, calm and respectful. As part of the catering team, we are made to feel welcome and part of the everyday routine.
The team I work with truly feels like a second family. I spend a big part of my day with them, and I put the same care into preparing meals here as I do at home for my own family. Seeing people enjoy what I’ve made, and hearing their thanks, always makes my day.
Looking back at your career so far, what accomplishment are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of receiving the Compass One Be A Star Award in the Customer Category after helping save a baby’s life. It was a deeply meaningful experience that reminded me of the difference quick thinking and care can make, and it’s a moment that will stay with me forever and continues to inspire me in my work.
What’s one ingredient or kitchen tool you can’t live without?
That would have to be my trusted knife. It’s the tool I rely on every single day and I just couldn’t do my job without it!
A heartfelt thank you to Zsuzsanna for taking the time to chat with us this week. We loved hearing about her passion for looking after patients and the heart she puts into every meal for them.
