Nutrition and Hydration Week is a helpful reminder of how central food and drink are to everyday wellbeing in care homes and other senior living settings, and how meaningful meals and regular hydration can be for residents. This international campaign raises awareness of the important role nutrition and hydration play in supporting health, recovery and overall quality of life.

For older adults, maintaining good nutrition can sometimes require extra support. Reduced appetite, medical needs and a higher risk of dehydration mean that rigorous care home food and drink standards must be in place to ensure residents receive balanced meals that support their changing needs. Supporting residents to eat and drink regularly often calls for both attentive care and a bit of creative thinking. This is reflected in the activities we ran during Nutrition & Hydration Week, which brought varied menus, familiar flavours and social dining experiences to mealtimes.

Food that supports healthy ageing

Good nutrition plays a central role in supporting health as people age, which makes the quality of food in care homes and other senior living environments especially important. As our understanding of nutrition continues to evolve, interest is growing in how diet influences gut health and cognitive function. Research increasingly shows that the gut microbiome may influence immunity, mental wellbeing and protection against certain illnesses. Studies exploring the gut-brain axis also highlight the connection between gut health, inflammation, frailty and cognitive decline. These insights are shaping our teams’ approach to catering in care homes and beyond, with greater emphasis being placed on gut-friendly ingredients.

Legumes such as beans, lentils and chickpeas are a particularly valuable addition to our menus. They provide fibre, protein, folate and key minerals that help improve overall diet quality. Alongside these longer-term menu developments, we also look for simple ways to encourage healthier choices. During Nutrition & Hydration Week, we celebrated Fruity Fridays across our sites, swapping traditional desserts for pre-portioned fruit and yoghurt cups topped with soft berries, banana slices, cinnamon and soft granola.

The importance of hydration in resident care

Hydration is a critical yet often overlooked part of resident care. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to dehydration, which can affect cognitive function, digestion, energy levels and overall wellbeing. Yet maintaining good hydration in later life is not always as straightforward as it sounds, particularly when reduced thirst or medical conditions affect drinking habits.

During Nutrition & Hydration Week, our teams introduced a range of simple initiatives to make staying hydrated more fun and engaging for residents. Hydration Stations were set up to offer easy access to a variety of drinks and infused waters, while Milkshake Mondays provided a fun way to support both hydration and additional nutrition. Social activities like our Global Afternoon Tea also gave residents a chance to enjoy a hot drink and spend quality time together.

Designing menus that support wellbeing

While Nutrition & Hydration Week gives us a chance to pause and reflect, thoughtful food in care homes and senior living settings remains our top priority all year round. Our menus are continually evolving to support residents’ health, combining the latest nutrition research with the practical knowledge of our chefs and dietitians. This helps us meet care home food standards while ensuring meals remain satisfying and appealing.

We aim to provide a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan options so residents in care homes always have meaningful choice. Seasonal British produce is another important part of our menus. Fruit and vegetables grown in season provide freshness and nutritional value, but they can also spark memories linked to the time of year. By combining plant-based ingredients with high-quality proteins and offering variety across our menus, we help encourage residents to eat well and stay well hydrated.
