We’re delighted to announce the launch of our specialised apprenticeship programme, designed specifically for catering teams working within senior living communities and hospices. The Production Chef Apprenticeship Programme has been thoughtfully developed for those dedicated to caring for older adults and vulnerable individuals.

Whether working in care homes, assisted living facilities, retirement villages or hospices, this apprenticeship helps teams develop the expertise needed to make a real difference to the daily lives and wellbeing of those in care.

“Our commitment to personalised care means we need our chefs to be talented, with a unique skill set – to serve those within a healthcare and senior living environment to the highest of standards. This will ensure we are fully equipping participants with the knowledge, skills and confidence to create delicious, nutritious meals that support health and wellbeing across diverse dietary needs.” – Laura Tighe, Business Director at White Oaks

About the programme

Created in partnership with leading hospitality apprenticeship provider, HIT Training, the 12-month programme consists of modules designed to build both skills and confidence. Over the year, apprentices will gain experience in:

  • Kitchen dynamics and day-to-day teamwork
  • Producing and presenting dishes to a consistently high standard
  • Food safety essentials
  • Kitchen management and stock control
  • Adapting and modifying food to suit different diets and requirements

The programme gives chefs the chance to work towards a Level 2 Production Chef Apprenticeship. Alongside this, they’ll also have access to a Level 1 Mental Health First Aid Awareness course, plus a 12-month affiliate membership with the Institute of Hospitality (IoH).

Our Head of Culinary, Darren Neal, who has played a leading role in developing the programme, summed it up best:

“We’re investing in this programme to build a strong, sustainable talent pipeline and ensure the highest standards of culinary experience across our venues. By developing chefs, our organisation can shape skills, nurture creativity and enhance its culture. This really demonstrates our commitment to offering meaningful careers and developing future leaders.”

The apprenticeship kicked off last week at Compass’ head office in Chertsey and it’s safe to say the room was buzzing with excitement as the programme got underway:

“I am really excited to be joining the first wave of this new apprenticeship programme. This is a great opportunity for me to take my career to the next level – it’s great to have a programme dedicated to this specific area of expertise.” – John Cooper, apprentice

We can’t wait to see how the group gets on over the next few months and what they achieve through the programme.
